The Sciton JOULE allows us to provide you with the widest array of aesthetic and
surgical procedures available from a single, scalable system.
The versatility of the Sciton JOULE readily enables combination treatments with many in the same session that can further enhance clinical outcomes.
Laser resurfacing is used for the treatment of skin irregularities like sun damage, blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles, or intense acne scars around the mouth, eyes, and forehead.
These procedures are done by using wavelengths of infrared light that treats the dermis. The Sciton JOULE allows us to control precision and depth of the treatment thus assuring good results and renewed skin.
If you are considering laser skin resurfacing, you will first need to consult with Dr. Cowen or our Aesthetician to find out if the procedure is right for you. As with any procedure, the primary consideration for laser skin resurfacing is your general health. Other factors to consider are skin type, ethnic background, and your expectations.
Certain problems such as allergies or previous burns or radiation exposure may necessitate a special evaluation to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for the procedure. You should also let us know if you get cold sores or fever blisters around your mouth, as this procedure can trigger breakouts in susceptible people.
Introducing the revolutionary Sciton Halo Laser, the world’s first and only hybrid fractional laser. The Halo laser delivers both ablative and non-ablative wavelengths of energy simultaneously to targeted areas of the skin. Dr. David Cowen is the first medical office in Lexington, Kentucky to offer Halo laser resurfacing.
Our laser expert, Candace Pelfrey, has over 15 years of experience in laser resurfacing and rejuvenation treatments.
The Halo is expected to be a game changer of cosmetic lasers and according to industry experts is being hailed “the first real innovation in lasers in the last decade.” The Halo, which was released April 2014, combines two singular types of laser depths allowing patients to achieve the impressive results of an ablative laser while enjoying the quicker recovery times that a non-ablative treatment provides. Halo laser treats sun damage, hyperpigmentation or dark spots, uneven texture, large pores, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars.
The NanoLaserPeel removes a thin layer of damaged skin to improve texture and provide a more youthful appearance. It provides superior results because it can be administered with great precision of depth. As the skin heals, fresh cells grow and resurface the treated area. The result is healthier-looking skin, often with reduced wrinkles and improved color evenness.
This is a fast and easy procedure, with slight redness for 1-2 days. The procedure causes little pain because it does not penetrate very deeply into the skin. At its most shallow settings, most people can tolerate treatment with no anesthetic at all.
Immediately after your treatment you will notice that the skin has a “frosty” appearance. This is the dehydrated skin that will peel away within a few days following your treatment. You may experience some skin redness and a sensation resembling sunburn, as well as mild swelling.
Conditions treated with NanoLaserPeel:
Sun Damage (Freckles)
Forever Young BBL (Sun Damage, Age Spots, & Redness):
Broad Band Light or BBL is an innovative technology that sets new standards for skin conditions associated with aging, active life-styles, and sun damage. BBL energy allows us to precisely treat age and sun spots, small facial veins, and other skin conditions.
Any area of the body can be treated. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight. Most popular treatment areas are the face, neck, back of hands, chest and shoulders.
The number of treatments needed vary from patient to patient. Our treatment plans are personalized to deliver the most effective outcomes. The procedure is gentle, noninvasive, and safe with virtually no downtime. In most cases, you are able to return to work, apply makeup, and resume most of your activities immediately.
Conditions treated with BBL are…
Pigmented Lesions (freckles, age spots)
Vascular Lesions (small blood vessels)
Uneven Skin Texture
Contour TRL (Deep Resurfacing):
As we age, the effects of sun damage and environmental pollutants take their toll on our skin, causing it to wrinkle, develop sun spots and look tired. A Sciton skin resurfacing procedure can reverse these effects and restore a healthy look to the skin. There are two approaches to resurfacing: full field, and fractional. In full field resurfacing, the entire surface area of the skin is treated. A laser beam is scanned across the treatment area and precisely removes a layer of skin. The body will naturally replace the old, damaged skin that was removed, with a fresh, healthy layer. Treatments can range from shallow (which might be appropriate for eliminating fine lines, sun spots and tired-looking skin) to deep (which is often used to improve skin tone/texture and eliminate deep wrinkles, even in difficult areas like upper lip lines and crow’s feet). In fractional resurfacing, the laser removes pinpoint columns of skin, leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This approach allows the laser to controllably ablate and coagulate tissue to variable depth, while the surrounding intact tissue promotes rapid healing.
The comfort level of laser resurfacing treatments varies from patient to patient and depends largely on the depth of treatment. For shallow treatments, the procedure is well tolerated with the use of a topical anesthetic. For deeper treatments, Dr. Cowen may administer a local anesthetic.
Complete healing depends on the depth largely on the depth of treatment. Healing times for shallow treatments are typically 2-4 days before patients resume normal activities. For deeper treatments, our staff will discuss realistic expectations for recovery.
CO2 Laser Resurfacing :
The carbon dioxide CO2 laser has been the "Gold Standard" resurfacing tool since 1995. Its major advantage over other laser techniques is that it tightens the skin, while stimulating increased collagen production. The results are similar to that of a mini-face lift, without incisions. However, due to it’s intensity, it requires an outpatient facility for general anesthesia. There are several limitations including prolonged and difficult recovery period lasting three weeks, facial redness that can last up to six months, hypo pigmentation or (lightening of skin), and the potential for infection which can lead to scarring. Dr. David Cowen has been performing CO2 resurfacing for over twenty years.
Laser Hair Removal (Hair Reduction):
The BBL uses a broad spectrum of light to heat the hair follicles to therapeutic temperatures for safe and effective hair removal. Any area of the body can be treated. The most common areas are the face, under arms, arms, legs, bikini area, chest, shoulders and back.
Treatments are gentle, non-invasive and safe. A cooling system soothes the skin, so the treatment is delivered with minimal or no discomfort. Personal sensitivity varies from patient to patient, so some patients may prefer a topical anesthetic.
Most areas require 4-6 treatments applied at 5-8 week intervals to achieve optimal benefit. Long-term results depend on multiple factors such as hair thickness, the area treated and the hair’s growth cycle. Hair grows in three stages: anagen, catagen and telogen. Hair reduction technologies can only treat hairs in the anagen phase, also known as the active growth phase. Not all hairs are in the same growth stage at the same time, multiple treatments are necessary to target all hairs in treatment site.
Hair reduction treatment is a non-invasive, gentle procedure with virtually no downtime. In most cases, you can resume your normal daily activities immediately.
Before & After
Skintyte (Skin Firming):
SkinTyte utilizes infrared energy to deeply heat soft tissue while protecting the entire treated area with sapphire contact cooling. Targeted heating causes soft tissue coagulation and collagen contraction. This process initiates the body’s natural healing process, resulting in a firmer, more youthful skin appearance. The full effect of skin firming treatments can be seen over several subsequent months.
